General Information
The Sleepy Gecko Guest House is established right in the heart of trendy Melville in Johannesburg. Situated at the corner of 7th Street and 3rd Avenue, Melville, it is right on the doorstep of the ‘vibey’ bars, restaurants and shops.
Furthermore, its proximity to SABC, the leading news agencies, the city of Johannesburg and other vibrant centers such as Rosebank, Sandton, Cresta and Randburg makes this the place to stay for local and foreign travelers, whether for business or pleasure.
The guest house was built in the 1930’s by a well know local character, Mrs. Rae, as two semi detached houses. She lived in them for the rest of her life and would sit on the verandah watching (and commenting) on the world passing by.
Now the houses have been re-built to create a single house with 4 large bedrooms with luxurious en-suite bathrooms and a further 2 executive suites at the rear of the property which have separate sleeping and lounge areas. The main house also has a lounge/reception room, dining room, kitchen and guest loo.

- Original 1930’s wardrobes in a variety of woods such as oak, satinwood and oregon pine. Beautiful writing desks with custom made chairs and other delightful furniture sourced from ‘Cape Cottage Furniture’
Sleepy Gecko Guest House offers the following bathroom facilities:
- Sandstone self-draining floors allowing you to splash away happily
- Divine victorian ball and claw bath with large victorian shower overhead
- Wall mounted heater
- Luxurious range of bath gels, shampoos, lotions, soaps and other large treats and very fluffy towels
Sleepy Gecko Guest House offers the following facilities:
- Very comfortable reception/lounge where you can relax, read the newspaper, magazine or book or play board games
- There is an honesty bar with cool drinks and snacks available 24 hours a day

- Six secure off-street parking bays, one bay for each room. One of the bays has been specifically designed for large vehicles like SUV’s
